Chico presented to the Animal Medical Center for coughing/hacking and regurgitation of mucous and phlegm. Dr. Stewarts took x-rays of his chest and noticed his esophagus, (the tube-like muscle from the mouth to the stomach), looked enlarged. She gave him barium to illuminate his G I tract on x-rays to determine that it was enlarged. Based on his clinical signs and x-rays, Chico was diagnosed with Mega esophagus. Dr. Stewarts placed him on medications and gave him a very strict feeding, watering, and medicating routine and schedule. Chico’s owners had to feed him on the stairs so the gravity could help to pull the food through his esophagus to his stomach. At his three week recheck, Chico’s owner explained that he was doing much better. Follow up Barium and x-rays showed his Mega esophagus was likely due to esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) and is now healed! Chico’s owner and everyone at Animal Medical Center are thrilled with his recovery!
